McDonald's first started in 1940 in California and it wasn't Ray Croc, the person that everyone associates with the present day McD's. In 1955 Ray Croc opened a franchised McDonalds in Iowa and purchased the company from the founders, two brothers, Dick and Mac McDonald. Crocs restaurant was the ninth McDonald's. The final deal was supposed to be a type of partnership between the McDonalds and Croc but it got ugly with both sides allegedly ripping off the other. When Croc got control of the company, he would open McDonald's near some Big M restaurants that the McDonald's had to run them out of business. It is said that the Taco Bell, Hardee's, Burger Chef, Whataburger, and Burger King chains were all started to try to duplicate the success and style of McDonald's business model and delivery systems
